Former President Bill Clinton met with actor Brad Pitt and hundreds of volunteers in the Lower 9th Ward on Sunday at the site where a foundation headed by Pitt plans to begin building affordable homes for Hurricane Katrina victims.
“We hope to see a huge change here in the next six months,” Pitt told a group of residents as he posed with them for pictures Sunday and signed autographs.
Pitt and Clinton walked a street as hundreds of volunteers on either side, wielding shovels and rakes, prepared the land for homes. For hours, they cleared overgrown grass and weeds that were covering street drains and sidewalks.
The Lower 9th Ward was one of the hardest-hit neighborhoods in New Orleans when Katrina struck on Aug. 29, 2005, causing the city’s levee system to fail with devastating flooding.
“We’re working to get the grounds ready so construction can begin,” said Anne Bouthilette, a 20-year-old sophomore history major at Trinity College in Hartford, Conn.

They’re talkin’ global change for the better at Tulane, and a presidential V.I.P. is leading the charge.
Former President Bill Clinton’s inaugural meeting at Tulane University has taken over the campus this weekend. The Clinton Global Initiative or CGIU is geared to get college students to address global issues through workshops and meetings on things like climate change, human rights, global health and poverty alleviation. Those who attend are expected to commit to address one of those topics and then later report to Clinton on progress made.
Seven-hundred students from across the globe, university presidents, celebrities and local leaders are all part of various panel discussions and speeches at the school.
Tomorrow March 16 , actor, Brad Pitt gets in on the Clinton Fray.
Pitt’s Make it Right project from the 9th Ward will be the site for Clinton and CGIU participants.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were left red-faced when they were refused entry to a rock concert. The Hollywood couple, dubbed ‘Brangelina’ tried to get themselves and a group of friends into the R.E.M. gig at the South by South West festival in Austin, Texas.
Unfortunately, the show’s organizers at the ‘Stubbs’ venue couldn’t accommodate the stars and their entourage, and the group was asked to move on.
Pitt, 44, is in Austin filming the Terrence Malick film, ‘Tree of Life’ starring opposite Sean Penn.
The South by South West music festival kicked off on 12 March and ends 16 March.
The music bash has been a permanent Austin fixture since 1987, and attracts thousands of music fans every year.

A charity co-founded by George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Don Cheadle and Matt Damon has donated $500,000 (£250,000) to the United Nations World Food Program.
The money, handed over by the stars’ Not On Our Watch organisation, is earmarked for the U.N.’s food aid agency to prevent hunger in the troubled Darfur region of Sudan.
In a statement, Clooney said: “Without immediate additional funding, humanitarian aid in the region will be crippled.”
Not On Our Watch has raised more than $9.3 million (£4.65 million) for Darfur, and last year (07) donated $1 million (£500,000) to the World Food Program.
Clooney has become a leading celebrity advocate for action against the genocide in the Sudan after filming a documentary about the crisis last year (06).
